Germany’s Love of White Gold [for National Geographic Traveller Food]

An open copy of National Geographic Traveller UK magazine

Back in May, I spent three days in Münsterland, north-west Germany, with the madly talented photographer Celia Topping. We were there on assignment for National Geographic Traveller Food UK to learn more about the German passion for white asparagus. It was an absolute dream job.

Amongst other things, I explored the gorgeous city of Münster, interviewed chefs and restauranteurs, spent time on a white asparagus farm, and ate my bodyweight in Germany’s king of vegetables. (Side note: it turns out you can have too much of it.) The resulting article, For the Love of White Gold, has been published in the September edition of the magazine, available now in all good UK newsagents. If you happen to read it, I’d love to know what you think.

Update, October 2018: The article is now also available to read online on the National Geographic Traveller website.

Update, Spring 2019: an edited version of this feature has now been published in National Geographic Traveler US and National Geographic Traveller India.

Update, May 2019: I won the 2019 Culinary Travel Writing award for this feature at the IACP awards in Sante Fe, New Mexico.
