The sweetest, most fragrant apricots from the stan The sweetest, most fragrant apricots from the stand outside the main train station in Mainz, grown about 7.5km (5 miles) up the road in Mainz-Finthen. We’re perfectly happy eating them straight out of their paper bag, but I think I might make a cake on the weekend. Any suggestions? 🧡

The spears won’t just disappear overnight: you can buy them for a few more days whilst stocks of already-harvested white asparagus lasts, but the longer you leave it, the less fresh it will be. But why does it end now? To allow the asparagus plants to regenerate for next year. (I believe originally, 24 June was considered to be around 100 days before the first frost, giving the plants enough time to get going before the ground got too cold.) So long, white asparagus, see you next year 👋 I hope you’ve all had your fill!

I think I’ll be moving in there permanently if this keeps up. Any of you care to join me, or would you rather be outside in the baking heat? ☀️
