I got lots of lovely rhubarb in my veg box a coupl I got lots of lovely rhubarb in my veg box a couple of weeks ago, and instead of making crumble, which is usually my first port of call, I decided to make @wednesdaychef‘s rhubarb cake (from Classic German Baking). It’s a delightfully easy cake to make, and absolutely delicious - a really light, fluffy sponge that’s not too sweet - which is a good thing really, because no one else eats rhubarb in this household, so I gave half to our neighbours and polished the rest off myself. I only forgot to press the rhubarb into the batter a bit before it went into the oven, so the fruit (*vegetable) was mostly sitting on top of the cake when it came back out, and some of the pieces got a bit burnt 😅
🎼 It‘s the most wonderful time of the year 🎶 (Part 2)
Its a couple of weeks now since I went on a day tr Its a couple of weeks now since I went on a day trip to @hessenpark, about 25km north of Frankfurt, with @erinehm. I posted lots about it in my stories at the time (they’re in my highlights now ☝️), but it’s an open air museum, part of whose purpose is to preserve historic buildings from around the federal state of Hessen. They’re displayed in clusters by region, which you can explore on a walking route that takes you round the whole park, and there‘s lots of opportunities to go inside them and look around. Lots of them also contain museum displays and workshops where you can buy various traditional handicrafts. We didn’t do much of that, because we were visiting for a plant fair that took over much of the park and loading up on various leafy things I’ve somehow not managed to yet kill. I‘m looking forward to going again at some point for a proper look around. A highly recommended day out! 🌱
I am SO happy to have a piece in @pitmagazineuk‘ I am SO happy to have a piece in @pitmagazineuk‘s recent potato issue (thank you @foodstories for sending me a copy!), in which I‘ve written about the endless variations - regional, personal, familial - of Germany’s potato salad. A joy to research, partly because it was an excuse to dive into my German cookbook library for a few days, but also because it gave me the opportunity to have a lovely email chat with @bakinghermann, who shared tips for making his plant-based Schwabian version. I don’t want any fighting in the comments, but I‘d really love to know: are you team mayonnaise when it comes to potato salad, or vinegar/stock/oil? Or something else altogether? 😬🥔
